Oakton Tournament, February 20, 2010

The Oakton Chess Club invites you to the
3rd Tournament of the 2009-2010 Evanston Scholastic Chess Season

When:      Saturday, February 20, 2010

Where:     Oakton School, 436 Ridge Ave., Evanston (entrance through parking lot on Austin St.)

Check-in:  9:00am

First Round:  9:30am

The tournament is open to all Evanston K-8 students.  Kids will play 4-5 rounds of chess.  Players

should know how to move all pieces, be able to play a whole game and know how to checkmate an

opponent.  Check with your chess coach for clarification.

Concessions will include morning coffee & donuts, snack foods, drinks, and pizza for lunch.

Registration is $4 per player. Players pay their chess coaches.

In an effort to make this tournament run smoothly, there will be no on-site registration. Space is

limited to 200 students, so don't delay in submitting your school's list of chess players.

Coaches:

Make checks payable to Evanston Scholastic Chess for the total number of players attending.  Please

pay with one check.  Team payments will be collected on the day of the tournament after the start

of round three.  Please email your rosters to Tom Doan at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   and Scott

Bates, This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   by February 17 at 9:00pm.  Rosters must include each

player's name and grade.  Include info about byes for round 1 ONLY with your registration; all

other byes are arranged during the tournament. Also, please bring boards -- one for every two players.

Bye Policy

Up to TWO half-point byes are allowed in any round except the final round. First round byes must be

requested during advance registration.  If a player takes a half-point bye, s/he must play a later round.

Parents, please sign your children out when they leave for a bye and sign them back in when they return.

Volunteers

As always, we will need parent volunteers to help with set-up, concessions, and (for chess playing

parents) monitoring the rounds. Those in charge of chess clubs should email Scott Bates at

This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to let us know how many adult volunteers will be available from your school.

Please supply names and email addresses for adults who have chess knowledge and can TD

(proctor) in the competition rooms. We will schedule TDs before tournament day. Please tell your

other parent volunteers to visit the sign-up board at the Registration Table on tournament day to sign

up for at least one volunteer slot during the day. Chess Coaches, please ensure that you have

enough adult supervision for your team.

Parking

Parking for 30-35 cars is available in the lot on the south side of the school (entrance on Austin Ave.).

Street parking can be found on Austin, the north side of Oakton St.,  and Barton Ave. (just west of

the playground).

We look forward to another fun tournament!

About Evanston Scholastic Chess

Evanston Scholastic Chess is a group of parents and volunteers who lead and organize school chess clubs in Evanston. We serve students in grades K-8 who either live in Evanston or attend an Evanston school.

Here's what we do:

  • Conduct four K-8 chess tournaments a year between the months of November and April. At our tournaments, children compete in age- and ability-based groups. These events are ideal for young Evanston chess players who want to try out the tournament experience. The tournaments are not USCF rated.
  • Take turns hosting Summer Chess at the Library, a community program held at the Main Branch of the Evanston Public Library.
  • Host an email list that Evanston Chess coaches, leaders and volunteers can use to share resources, plans and best practices.
